Small Grant Facilitation Awarded to ALiSEA Network Members in Southeast Asia in 2022

Seven members of the Agroecology Learning Alliance in Southeast Asia (ALiSEA) network had been awarded the Small Grant Facilitation (SGF) in 2022. Supported through ASSET Project, these grants were based on a Call for Proposal that focused on three essential topics aimed at promoting agroecology and food systems in the region including 1) assessing the impact and effect of public policy supporting agroecology and food systems at multiple levels; 2) testing and supporting agroecology innovations (technical, social, economic, organizational and institutional); and 3) evaluating the performance and impacts of agricultural and food systems of ALiSEA members’ field initiatives.

A valuable training workshop was organised in an initiative to support sustainable livestock production and strengthen the beef value chain in the framework of agroecology. This event, which was organised by prestigious organisations such as the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD), the Center for Agrarian Systems Research and Development (CASRAD), and the National Institute of Animal Sciences (NIAS), was an outstanding example of cooperation and knowledge sharing.

Laos Organises First Sub-Sector Working Group on Agroecology (SSWG-AE) Meeting

The Sub-Sector Working Group on Agroecology (SSWG-AE) held its inaugural meeting, marking a significant milestone in the field of sustainable agriculture on November 24, 2023, in Vientiane, Lao PDR. Governed under Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF), this new unit, a part of Sector Working Group on Agriculture and Rural Development (SWG-ARD), was recently approved by the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) in October 2023.

Strengthening Beef Value Chain Through Capacity Building in Northwestern Vietnam

In a collaborative effort to enhance the increasingly demanding value chain of beef, National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS), in partnership with CIRAD and provincial Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), recently organized Training of Trainers (ToT) courses between 08-11 November. Held in Son La and Dien Bien provinces in Northwestern Vietnam, this initiative aimed to empower key players in the beef industry by fostering the adoption of large-scale innovations such as forage cultivation, silage preparation, and composting techniques.

ASEAN Agriculture Key Actors Discuss Agroecology Policy at TARASA23

In a policy dialogue that brought together around a hundred participants from agriculture and food system communities from Southeast Asia and Europe, the focus was set on the future of sustainable agriculture and agroecology transition. The dialogue aimed to generate recommendations for policy support for agroecology transition, fostering cooperation for sustainable agriculture, and contributing to ASEAN policy guidelines on agroecological transition.

Position Papers: An Agroecological Vision of Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam

These papers present the findings of the ASSET and ALISEA National Foresight based on Theory of Change Workshops held in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam in October 2022. The workshops were organized as part of the ASSET Project to engage in a transformative approach and foster a sense of belonging to a common vision for agroecology and safe food systems.

How Stylo Cover Cropping Enriches a Cambodian Farmer's Soil and Life

Mrs. Bunthoeurn Sam, 58-year-old, is a farmer from Rik Reay commune, Rovieng district, Preah Vihear province of Cambodia. She is among the early adopters to grow cover crop as a method to restore degraded agricultural lands, an agroecological practice promoted by ASSET Project.
