ASSET Annual Partners Workshop 2022

The ASSET (Agroecology and Safe Food System Transitions) team successfully organized its first Annual Partners Workshop between 26 and 28 April, 2022. The workshop was conducted in hybrid mode with partners meeting in-person in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Almost 106 partners attended the workshop including the partners from Europe who joined via Zoom.

Located in the north of Cambodia, the province of Preah Vihear has been known for its organic farming since 2015, promoting an organic value chain for rice, cassava, cashew and peanut. There are two main agroecology systems in Preah Vihear: one, upland based on good soil, flat land and two lowland based on medium-poor soil and sloping land.

The ASEAN Vision and Strategic Plan for Food Agriculture and Forestry 2016 - 2025 is a “competitive, inclusive, resilient and sustainable food agriculture and forestry sector, integrated with the global economy, based on a single market and production base contributing to food and nutrition security and prosperity in the ASEAN Community.” Collaboration between government and research institutes, development partners and the private sector are envisaged to play important roles in achieving this vision. In response, UN ESCAP and other ASSET project partners teamed-up to convene a multi-stakeholder virtual event to discuss the requirements for transition to agroecology and safe food systems. The workshop discussions were targeting in particular to contribute to the current initiative to produce ASEAN guidelines on sustainable agriculture, as provided under the ASEAN Comprehensive Recovery Framework and Implementation Plan and to strengthen the Lao PDR-facilitated Initiative on Agroecology for the ASEAN (LICA) process.

Promoting forage peanut in tree plantations

In partnership with provincial agricultural services and other local partners, the ASSET Project supported in 2021 the planting of forage peanut in a dozen of fruit orchards in Son La and Dien Bien Provinces, Vietnam. The objective of this preliminary, small-scale, on–farm experiment is to assess forage peanut ability to compete with weeds and survive to cold winter conditions.

Agroecological transformation for sustainable food systems: Insight on France-CGIAR research

The urgency of agroecological transformation of agrifood systems linked to SDGs will be one of the game changers discussed at the UN World Food Systems Summit this year. A variety of agroecological transition pathways and also a diversity in terms of means for public action are ahead of us. Lessons are also to be learned from past trajectories in the Global North and other parts of the world.

ALiSEA Network – National Board of Members appointed in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam

Vientiane, 31 May 2021, a significant milestone in the history of ALiSEA Network was reached towards an autonomous member-managed network with the creation of the National ALiSEA Board of Members in three countries: Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam!

ASSET Project successfully identified 03 flagship sites to support innovations and knowledge production in agroecology and safe food system transitions at regional level. They are Preah Vihear Province in Cambodia; Xieng Khouang Province in Laos; North-west region with interventions in Sơn La and Điện Biên Provinces in Vietnam.

The new project Agroecological and Safe food System Transitions in Southeast Asia (ASSET) successfully organized its hybrid kick-off workshop from 10th to 12th November 2020.
