Southeast Asia Agroecology Network Organizes First Regional General Assembly

Luang Prabang, Laos – Agroecology Learning Alliance in Southeast Asia (ALiSEA) successfully carried out its Regional General Assembly in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR. Held from March 26 to 28, 2024, the event brought together 65 participants from member organizations of the ALiSEA network from Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand; working in the field of agroecology across the countries, such as local and international non-government organizations, farmers’ organizations, universities and research centers.

Preah Vihear Province Hosts Its First Agroecology Fair

Preah Vihear Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (PDAFF) hosted an Agroecology Fair for Preah Vihear province on 22 March 2024, in collaboration with partners of Agroecology and Safe Food System Transitions (ASSET) project in Cambodia. The fair aimed at raising public awareness, especially among stakeholders in organic product value chains, regarding benefits of agroecology-based agriculture systems and negative impacts of conventional farming with excessive reliant on chemical inputs.

Addressing Agricultural Challenges Through Dei Meas: A Pathway to Sustainable Farming

Cambodia faces pressing challenges in its agricultural sector, exacerbated by factors such as climate change, soil degradation, and high-cost low production farming practices. With the global population projected to increase significantly by 2050, the demand for food is set to rise, placing additional strain on agricultural resources. In this context, transitioning to sustainable farming practices is imperative to ensure food security, environmental protection, and the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.

Field Visit Catches Journalists’ Interest to Report on Agroecology in Cambodia

Seven journalists from different local media agencies, including radio, television, newspapers and online news media, participated in a field visit to the flagship site of Agroecology and Safe Food System Transitions (ASSET) project in Rovieng district, Preah Vihear province on 18 November 2023. The field visit was organized by the Agroecology Learning Alliance in Southeast Asia (ALiSEA) team in Cambodia with aims to share knowledge and practical experiences of agroecology at the field, to connect journalists with farmers, agriculturists and local authorities, and to encourage them to report about agroecology concepts and awareness to a broader audience.

NAFRI Presents Preliminary Result on Cattle Value Chain Study in Xiengkhouang Province

A workshop on “Preliminary Results of Cattle Value Chain Study in Xiengkhouang Province” took place as part of the ASSET Project activities, organized by National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute (NAFRI) on 26 December 2023 in Vang Vieng province, Laos. The workshop's focus was on examining the current situation of the cattle value chain in Xiengkhouang province, the flagship site of ASSET Project. It served as a platform for validating research results with stakeholders from Xiengkhouang Provincial Agriculture and Forestry Office (PAFO) and local farmers.

ASSET Project Contributes in Organic Zoning Workshop for Sustainable Agriculture in Preah Vihear

Battambang, Cambodia – Cambodia Conservation Agriculture and Sustainable Intensification Consortium (CASIC) conducted a field visit on 13 December 2023 to Sustainable Soil for Life Association (SSLA), a Cambodian association working with poor vulnerable Cambodian people, youth, and communities in rural areas to bring about economic, social and environmental change towards sustainability.

It’s right under our feet. We barely notice as we go about our lives, yet it is nothing less than the largest carbon repository among all of Earth’s ecosystems. This distinction is awarded neither to forests, nor to the atmosphere, but to our soils. There are around 2,400 billion tons of carbon in the first two metres below ground, which is three times as much as in the atmosphere.

Exploring Sustainability in Livestock Agriculture: ASSET Highlights from SAADC 2023 Conference

Vientiane, Lao PDR - The Agroecology and Safe Food System Transitions (ASSET) Project team took part in Sustainable Animal Agriculture for Developing Countries (SAADC2023) International Conference, centered around the theme "Sustainable Animal Agriculture for a Sustainable Tomorrow" from 21-24 November 2023. Hosted by Faculty of Agriculture, National University of Laos, this significant event brought together experts and researchers, showcasing over 190 presentations. These presentations offered comprehensive insights into ongoing research in various domains of livestock systems, including nutrition, genetics, animal health, farm management, and the interplay between livestock and the environment.

Small Grant Facilitation Awarded to ALiSEA Network Members in Southeast Asia in 2022

Seven members of the Agroecology Learning Alliance in Southeast Asia (ALiSEA) network had been awarded the Small Grant Facilitation (SGF) in 2022. Supported through ASSET Project, these grants were based on a Call for Proposal that focused on three essential topics aimed at promoting agroecology and food systems in the region including 1) assessing the impact and effect of public policy supporting agroecology and food systems at multiple levels; 2) testing and supporting agroecology innovations (technical, social, economic, organizational and institutional); and 3) evaluating the performance and impacts of agricultural and food systems of ALiSEA members’ field initiatives.
